Animal Inquiry: Whale Shark

I have been learning about the Whale Shark.

Here's some facts for you:

1. They are the biggest fish in the sea.
2. They are very slow travellers, moving at around 3 mph-5mph.
3. Whale Sharks can have 300 pups.
4. They are carnivores with their favourite meal is plankton.
5. They can not survive in cold water (less than 30 degrees celsius).
6. Whale Sharks have 3,000 teeth (but they're very small).
7. The average weight of the Whale Shark is 18.7 tonnes.
8. The largest whale shark ever measured was12.2 metres long (similar to the size of a bus).
9. Whale sharks have been sighted off the coasts of of Australia, India, the Maldives, South Africa, Belize, Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
10. Human fishermen are a predator of the Whale Shark.

Animals Inquiry

Today Room 8 explored the internet
searching for information about
their animal.
I have chosen to investigate
the alligator.
This is some information I learnt :

• Alligators eat fish,frogs,snakes,turtles,birds and mammals in the wild
• In North America alligators are known to attack humans
• Alligators can survive a wider range of temperatures then other crocodilians
• Alligators can lay 30 to 60 eggs per clutch
• Alligators can hold their breathe for 2 hours

Willowbank Visit

Today the children in the M team visited Willowbank Wildlife Sanctuary. The children explored the various animals and most of the children had their favourites sorted by time we left. Joshua K loved the 'dancing otters' and if you scroll down their is a short video clip. Phoebe received a slight fright from most animals, however she jumped the furthest when the otters leapt at her. Brooke did warn her. Roger took five children on an extended tour with him. Losing a parent on a field trip would be a first. Roger showed some children how to get the birds to land on their arms. Jonty and Ricky were the most successful with many birds landing on them. Check the photos out. The group of children who explored Willowbank with Mr Lane and I thought the Ring tailed lemurs were doing yoga. They had a strong pose and were meditating.(Blocking out the children). The children had the opportunity to touch the Finned eels that are endemic to New Zealand, and also saw the NZ Falcon, Kiwi and Tuatara. The children learnt so much and their enthusiasm will allow for some fantastic inquiry questions. Mister A

Animal Inquiry

This week the children in Room 8 have been absorbing information about animals. We firstly looked at the polar bear and were amazed at how is is the largest land meat eater and largest bear in the world.
We viewed some YouTube clips of some interesting characters jumping into the zoo enclosures to have a closer look at these amazing creatures. The purpose of the clips were to show the children that the animals are not dangerous, but humans put themselves into dangerous situations.
In Room 8, we also learnt that Americans fly to Canada and pay up to $37,000 US Dollars to hunt a polar bear. These Trophy Hunters are not allowed to hunt polar bears in Alaska (a US State) and therefore cross the border. The clip we watched was asking for the protection of the polar bear. I think it would be a great idea for these creatures to be proteccted as numbers are continuing to deccrease.
The children also learnt about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds.

Animal Inquiry

Kia Ora Parents,

This week the children will begin absorbing information about animals for their 5 week inquiry. The children have been learning to write information reports in literacy, as well as classifying information. This will assist them in their inquiry.
The children are keen to start exploring and many have talked about animals that they would like to learn about. Also in our absorbing the children are looking forward to their visit to Willowbank.

The children in Room 8 today had interviews about their inquiry research. The children showed confidence in sharing their information and this will help them when they present their PowerPoints. Well done Room 8 children.

Inquiry Questions

The students this week have been creating questions for their Inquiry study. Some of the questions has led Room 8 on other tangents in our learning. Some of the children were interested in learning about animals in the war. In our research we found out about anti-tank dogs. It was interesting. You could ask your children about 'anti-tank dogs'.
