Air Jaws - Descriptive Writing

Next week, we will be looking at 'Air Jaws'. These great white sharks fly out of the water. The video was from 'Discovery Channel' originally and I located this clip on YouTube.

The video shows these giant well-designed predators leaping from the water. The 'seal' is fake and was made to tempt the sharks to jump from the water.

No seals were harmed in the making of this film.

So we are prepared for our next lesson I would like you to watch this clip and post as many descriptive words and sentences on the blog. On Monday we will use these words as a start to our brainstorms.

Keep up the great work!

Mathematics: The strategies we are learning!

I have had many parents come and ask about the maths in Room 8. The children in Room 8 maths are being challenged and learning new strategies.
Some strategies are hard to grasp, however the children learn and apply the strategy over a few weeks.
The children are exploring larger numbers and values, this has had some children loose confidence. Practise makes perfect! We learn by doing and experiencing.

Room 8 maths children have a new best friend named Tidy Numbers and also we are going to conquer Mt Everest (new strategies).

The Room 8 maths class is also being tested daily on the multiplication facts. The children should be learning these at home.

I am sure many parents would like to know what strategies the children are learning and I have made a video display of how the strategy is applied.

Please feel free to post comments or ask questions.

Positive Work Habits

The children in Room 8 have been working extremely hard this term. Above are some photos of the students in Room 8 being focused and on task.
Tumeke!
Well done Room 8.

Learning Cricket Skills

Over the past two weeks Room 8 have been learning cricket skills. The children learnt the skill of catching, throwing and bowling. This was the last week of cricket skills before rotation to the next sport.

After we learnt the skills to play cricket Room 8 played a competitive game. The game had some great batting and bowling.
Lydia O smashed a straight drive over the bowlers head, in a real game a 4 all the way. The bowler was Hunter R.
Joshua K took an excellent catch, 200 house points.
Top batters for the game was all of Room 8.
Top bowlers for the game was Jonty W, Olivia B and Joshua K.

Future Black Caps.

ActivBoard

Recently Room 8 welcomed a new member to our class, 'ActivBoard'. The children are learning to use the ActivBoard and have enjoyed completing activites. This learning tool has been engaging and interactive for the children.
The photo are of the children completing an RE activity where they are completing the sentences.
Please feel free to come in and visit our new member.

Te Reo Maori

Kia Ora,

This year, every fortnight the staff at O.L.A learn a new phrase in Te Reo Maori to teach to their class. Te Reo Maori being an official language of beautiful Aotearoa is important for all children to have some knowledge.

I encourage parents to practise Te Reo with your children. Saying hello and how you are in Te Reo Maori is a fantastic starter.

The clip below helps with the translation.
The voice is very charismatic, and I'm not being biased!
